The Most Jameis Winston Thing That Jameis Winston Did This Week
May The Lord Deliver You To A Better Week
Some people are simply transcendent. These people excel at such a high level in their given field that their talent, drive, and efforts cannot go unnoticed even if they do so in a profession you normally wouldn't think to pay attention to. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, they demand recognition and more importantly: they demand respect.
Jameis Winston is not one of those people. Jameis Winston is an NFL quarterback who, at best, would be considered by most be slightly above mediocre. As a college QB he had a reputation for being a big, physical, gunslinging threat who always willed his team to win. But after being a high draft pick to the Buccaneers, his biggest accomplishment from his years in Tampa Bay came from a season in which he because the first QB to throw both 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in the same season. After losing his starting job to Tom Brady and being released in 2019, Jameis became a career backup playing in New Orleans and now in Cleveland.
This is all background info to let you know just how wildly unpredictable and head scratching Jameis’ on-field career has always been. However, outside of his play, Jameis has always had a way with words. Judging by the signs, a significant part of the reason he still has a job playing professional football is that people just love being around the guy. He will never pass up a chance to give you a memorable moment.
Take this video from late in his Tampa Bay days, where he did pass up the chance to give a normal pre-game hype speech, and instead opted to “eat a W” and ask his teammates to do the same (before being cut off by his teammate).
Yes they lost the game, but we shouldn’t dwell on that. To be honest with you, many of the Jameis moments that echo throughout history end with him losing a game so there’s really no point talking about that and also it doesn’t matter! If you ever bring up how many “wins” Jameis has, or how many more “losses” he’s suffered I will cover my ears and yell until you stop. That kind of negativity has no place in conversations about my boy Jamo. Even when he loses his job, no amount of adversity can stop Jameis Winston from seeing the silver lining.
“I guess that’s kudos to me.” Yes! I got laid off last year, I guess that’s kudos to me! With the current presidential administration on its way out, I will no longer have a break from repaying my student loans: I guess that’s kudos to me! This is how you deal with difficult developments, people!
So that brings us to where we are now. As the new starting quarterback of a Cleveland Browns team that is insanely bad, Jameis has brought a sense of joy and electricity to a team (and a huge number of football watchers) who desperately need it. Part of that comes from the fact that he’s replacing Deshaun Watson—a man with over 20 sexual assault allegations and counting—who is almost universally hated by anyone even remotely interested in sports.
But aside from replacing a despised QB, Jameis has been working overtime to keep reporters and meme makers busy. Remember what I said about transcendent individuals? That may not apply to Jameis Winston on the field, but it absolutely applies to what he says when he’s left it. Like after a rare win, in which he insists on giving quotes that you might expect to see on a teenage girl’s bedroom wall.
Or a beautifully worded proverb that, at its core, fundamentally misunderstands why and how a horse comes to be involved in a war:
Every Jameis quote has the energy of a 10 year old who just ate a bucket of a Halloween candy, and it comes from a man who looks like he may or may not have just endured a concussion. Full of joy, this is a man who cannot be stopped!
Every quote Jameis gives is a snowflake, beautiful and fleeting and more nonsensical than the last. Sometimes I’ll be typing away at work, bored as hell, and without prompting I’ll say aloud to myself “let’s be obsessed with energy!”
This goofy youth pastor in pads has fully consumed my everyday thoughts and actions. I cannot separate my daily mannerisms from his and honestly, I don’t want to.
So in honor of his greatness, I am introducing a new excuse from now until the end of the NFL season in 4 weeks to track his most memorable acts.
The Most Jameis Winston Thing That Jameis Winston Did In NFL Week 13
As you see, almost 1 month ago we were introduced to Jameis’ insistence on “unwavering faith, ultimate belief, depending on the lord” in this pregame interview in Baltimore. On Monday, we were introduced to a new layer in his relationship with God:
“I know I’m better than this… I’m just praying for the Lord to deliver me from pick sixes. That’s not me.”
The thing is, Jameis is like… NOT better than this. It’s actually exactly who he is and has always been (see the earlier referenced stat about his touchdown to interception reference). But that’s ok to me. I’m choosing to interpret this as a quote about how who you were doesn’t have to be who you are, and who you are isn’t who you will be forever. WWJD (what would Jameis do?) runs through my mind often, and the answer is always different. Anything can happen when you say “fuck it,” let it rip, and send a little prayer to the sky.
Embrace your opportunity to be great this week, readers. Jameis can do it, I can do it, and you can do it too. And if we can’t? Well, you know the saying: That’s kudos to us!
